Ancestor panel from the Paiwan tribe

This massive ancestral panel, over 2.5 meters tall and 14 centimeters thick, depicts a figure holding a spear in his right hand and a knife in his left. His torso is adorned with the carved ornaments of a ceremonial jacket, including fastenings, buttons, and a sash made of fabric and shell, representing formal attire. The ancestor’s head is crowned with a headdress featuring the “Langi” chrysanthemum motif—a symbol of high social rank. His face, with an open mouth and clenched teeth, conveys the aggressiveness of a warrior.
