Eastern Paiwan Tribes ( Taimali) ancestor panel

This panel from the Eastern Paiwan tribe, living around Taimali near Taitung, is an exceptional and very rare piece in the Taimali style, as documented by Chen Chi-lu in Material Culture of the Formosan Aborigines: “The Taimali style has the upper part of the post carved to represent a big nose, and, on the lower part, there is a figure carved in the traditional style.” This object is carved with a large nose, topped by a stylized face above and another stylized face below. The top of the panel narrows, suggesting a function as a support or a pillar for a roof beam. It is made from a noble, very dense, and heavy wood.
