Ancestor panel from the Paiwan tribe

This ancestor panel from the Paiwan tribe, likely collected near Taimali in the eastern part of the island close to Taitung, embodies the elegance of simplicity. The ancestor’s status is not displayed in an ostentatious manner, as is often the case. The sculptor chose — likely at the family’s request — to lightly carve the hat, belt, and ankle bracelets, focusing instead on the serpent encircling the head, the noblest of symbols. For the family, nothing more needed to be added, as this alone perfectly captured the character of the ancestor, the “Vuvu”.
