Ancestor statue of the Rukai tribe

This ancestor statue depicts a couple. The man, slightly taller than his wife, places his right hand on her chest while his left hand rests on her shoulder. The woman places one hand on her belly—a symbol of fertility—and the other on her husband’s shoulder. Both figures are shown nude. The positioning of the hands is rich in symbolic meaning. The couple’s noble status is affirmed by the sacred snake frieze at their feet. Traces of black pigment can be seen at the base of the statue. The quality of the carving and the subtlety of its symbolism suggest that it was sculpted by a master artist.
