CEREMONIAL TRAY OF THE PAIWAN TRIBE

Carved with snakes, human faces, and game animals such as deer and wild boar. The snakes symbolize the family’s nobility, the animals represent both an abundant harvest and hunting prowess, while the human faces embody honor, the warrior’s courage, and spiritual power. The tray is topped with a sculpture of a deer, most likely emphasizing the hunting role of the head of the family, and was once painted with yellow, red, and white pigments that have faded over time.
