Mortar of the Truku tribe

Although we have categorized this mortar under the Atayal tribe for ease of navigation on our website, it actually belongs to the Truku tribe, from which the name of the famous Taroko marble gorges near Hualien originates. The current Truku population is approximately 32,333 people (as of January 2020). In 2004, they were officially recognized as one of the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan, known as the Truku people. The Truku highly value their weaving and facial tattooing traditions, believe in ancestral spirits, and follow Gaya, the ancestral code of conduct.
