Necklace from the Yami tribe in its carved wooden box.

This exceptional and rare necklace from the Yami tribe (Orchid Island) comes with its carved wooden box and is called Obai. It is composed of silver plates shaped like beans — although Tadao Kano, in his book, describes them as cocoon-shaped. These necklace are precious and handed down from father to son . There is no silver on the island; the Yami used rare silver coins – Most of the time Chinese coins- they could obtain and hammered them flat to achieve the desired shape.
