Paiwan tribe Panel

This small panel, made of heavy and dense wood, comes from the Paiwan tribe of southern Taiwan. It was traditionally used as a small door to conceal the contents of niches carved into the thick slate walls of a house. These recesses were often reserved for storing sacred objects. Alternatively, such panels could serve as shutters for small square windows. These architectural elements reflect the Paiwan people’s attention to sacred space and symbolic protection within the home.
